A Journey Through Sacred Monasteries and Mountain Heritage
The name “Meteora” was given by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite, founder of the Great Meteoron Monastery, who first climbed the massive rock in 1344 and named it the “suspended rock.” Despite periods of decline during the fall of the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman conquest of Thessaly in 1393, Meteora flourished again in the 15th and especially the 16th century with the foundation of many monasteries and the creation of exceptional Byzantine frescoes.
Today, six monasteries are active: Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Rousanou, St. Nicholas Anapausas, Holy Trinity, and St. Stephen’s, the latter inhabited exclusively by nuns. The Holy Trinity Monastery was featured in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. All monasteries are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
