The Town of Parga

Parga is a picturesque seaside resort nestled between the coastal towns of Igoumenitsa and Preveza, uniquely blending mountain and sea. One of the most cosmopolitan and charming destinations in northwestern Greece, it invites you to explore its rich history, stunning natural beauty, and warm local hospitality.

The town is defined by its stone-paved alleys, flower-filled neighbourhoods, and traditional tavernas, all contributing to Parga’s idyllic character.

Visitors can choose between organised beaches or secluded coves, perfect for peaceful escapes and swimming in crystal-clear waters. There are also many walking trails through the hills and countryside for those who love nature and discovery.

Parga lies 70 km from Preveza’s Aktio Airport and, during the summer, has ferry connections to nearby islands such as Paxos, Antipaxos, and Corfu.

Local Landmarks and Sights

  • Parga Castle (14th century): Built with the help of the Normans, later rebuilt by the Venetians.
  • Ali Pasha’s Castle: Situated on a hill overlooking the entire region, it offers breathtaking views.
  • Panagia Islet: Just opposite the port, with a small church, bell tower, and a French-built fortress.

Strolling Through Parga

Often described as the “jewel of Epirus”, Parga is a delicate beauty draped across the hillside below its medieval castle. The narrow cobbled paths that wind up to the fortress are lined with two- and three-storey houses, wooden balconies, tiled roofs, artisan shops, and quaint churches.

Along the waterfront, you’ll find restaurants, cafés, tavernas, and bars, all buzzing with life. The islet of Panagia is a highlight — swim or paddle there for a unique view of Parga from the sea.

The Castles of Parga

  • Parga Castle: Located at the edge of town, a climb through the alleys leads to panoramic views over the Ionian Sea.
  • Churches nearby: Agioi Apostoloi, Agia Eleni, and the Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna in Valtos feature beautiful iconography.
  • Anthousa Castle: Built by Ali Pasha to monitor and eventually besiege rebellious Parga. Designed by a European architect, it features thick walls, towers, and arched corridors. Two Russian cannons still lie within the grounds. The castle is well preserved and dramatically lit at night.
